ASIA KOMAROVA

Asya Komarova was born in Voronezh, Russia, but currently lives and works in The Netherlands. In her artworks Asia often deals with social and participatory practices and actively involves citizens and members of local communities in her projects.  Dialogue, engagement, and creating new social relations in the process of co-creation is one of the  main functions of contemporary art, the artist says. Asya Komarova breaks stereotypes and boundaries. In some of her works, like in 'Healing', for example, nature invades the city and  the carpet of grass appears in the tiled hallway. In «'DO NOT’ drum system» urban warning signs become musical instruments. For the industrial area of Amsterdam Overamstel Asya sha created a map in the form of a board where every resident can add their object or comment. In the city of Utrecht with Txcell Blanco she has organized a fair of arts and crafts products created by local residents.

For the exhibition Critical Mass 2013 Asya has proposed a project 'Soon I Will Become a Pensioner' , which aims to bring together older and younger generations within the community of Kupchino and give a platform for senior citizens to share their knowledge and expertise in urban gardening, knitting, cooking and many other skills which may seem outdated but are in fact quite useful and great to have.
